This book has much to recommend it: vivid, imaginative worldbulding, and lovely, lyrical prose. However, there's a lot of repetition, and I thought it should have been tightened up to 400 instead of 500 pages. The imagery is gorgeous, but ultimately the story meanders around a lot, has lots of unexplored loose ends, and never quite manages a satisfying conclusion. I really wanted to love this book more, but I enjoyed it enough that I'm going to seek out the author's previous novel The Night Circus.
