I loved this book as much as I loved the first book in the series (even paid full Kindle price to support more of the same). In the afterword, the author states she wanted to "put Black people back into history", especially in the chronicles of the Old West where they are pretty well completely ignored. Set within a post Civil War "shambler" apocalypse, our kick-ass heroines successfully battle the undead hordes and a diabolically evil scientist while overcoming systemic racism. As readers, we get a realistic view of frontier California and the stark struggles blacks and women faced. However, in this alternate history, the most oppressed also end up being the best trained and most capable of fighting the plague with a corresponding higher mortality rate. As a side note, many of the themes is this book book resonate today and parallel Covid-19's disproportionate impact on the U.S.'s modern minority populations. All that said, it really is a great story, well written and filled with great characters. Hopefully, we get more of Jane and Katherine's adventures.
