These stories were often witty, consisting of a mix of classic fairytale atmosphere and historical fiction, sprinkled with unreliable fae magic and some gothic moments. Some of these stories challenged the female role during the 19th century as Clarkes pokes fun at the classical role models of man and woman in British Society at this time. I also enjoyed how Clarke portrays Fae as dark - even leaning on portraying them cruel - and twisty without loosing their magical appeal.

Favourite Stories: Tom Brightwind or How the Fairy Bridge was built at Thoresby (I could read a whole book of Tom and David stories, they are hilarious), The Ladies of Grace Adieu (loved how unimportant she portrayed Jonathan Strange), John Uskglass and the Cumbrian Charcoal Burner, Mr. Simonelli or the Fairy Widower.
