Gripping yet disappointing

I loved The Businessman--it was my favourite book of 2018--but even though I read The M.D. at a record pace I couldn't help but feel disappointed.

The story is solid, and the weird concepts are fascinating and effective, but in the end it simply isn't as well-written (it lacks a certain poetry The Businessman had--in aiming to be more commerical, Disch loses a little of his true voice) or as well-structured as the previous book.

I simultaneously thought that we could have seen more of the then alternative future of 1999, while the section of the novel it was actually in (Book Five, the final section) felt like it dragged.

I will carry on the series however (The Priest I've heard described as the best by trusted sources), and will eventually write something much more in-depth about the "Supernatural Minnesota" series.
