The angsty teenage angst stuff is really annoying to me. I'm not one of those who enjoys reading about childhood or school days. I don't enjoy reading about snotty, petulant teenagers and their petty jealousies and rivalries and political maneuvering.
But I found the worldbuilding in this book interesting enough to keep going. I enjoyed the creaky, steampunky, broken-down school complex still trying to do what it needed to do, and the various types of magic. And seeing at least some of the characters being kind to each other is a bit of a balm, with all of the horrible things going on in the real world right now.
