This one seemed rather longer than it needed to be / should have been. I thought it could have been trimmed by 10 to 20 pages.
I did read recently a discussion by an SF author (probably Isaac Asimov) about SF ideas having their own "natural length". He was suggesting that it would be helpful to be attuned to the this notion, and that you could save yourself a lot of grief and extra work by assessing whether you had a "short-story" sort of notion or a novella notion, etc. Of course, he was at the utter mercy of his editors earlier on, and if they disagreed with him, they wouldn't accept the story - and he wouldn't get paid!
My rating system starts with a rating of one star for a story/novel that I ranked "C -". Ratings move up 1/2 star with each step, up to 5 stars (equivalent to a ranking of A+). I reserve 1/2 star for works rated D and lower.
