I love that this book (like all of Vernon's books) is about good and decent people, faced with extraordinary challenges, just doing the best that they can and never giving up, no matter how exhausted and overwhelmed they feel. She has the knack of blending darkness and evil with goodness and kindness and hope, leavened with practicality and whimsy and humor. It's just a magical combination: even though her stories frequently contain a lot of darkness and death and grief, they nevertheless end up being "feel-good" reads.
