This is a clever story about an esteemed music teacher and the protege he trained, whose musical compositions far outshone his own. When the hot-tempered prodigy commits a murder and is sentenced to die, the teacher is given a gift which he uses to lift himself out of a life of penury and uncertainty to one where he is prosperous and highly-acclaimed... and then a ghost from the past threatens to take it all away from him.

As with all of this author's faux histories, this one has a morally-ambiguous, unreliable narrator and several twists and turns to keep the reader interested.
