This is a slim volume (230 pages). I would call it a "cozy" mystery; the killing takes place offscreen. As with The Goblin Emperor, it's very low-key, featuring a good person who is doing their best to do the right things and solve mysterious murders while dealing with really aggravating - possibly life-threatening - political machinations. It's enjoyable, but not quite as good as The Goblin Emperor (which I re-read immediately before this). Recommended as a balm to those experiencing real-life stress.
