This is a creditable and enjoyable debut novel. The characters are pretty much the cast of Firefly and the Reavers with the serial numbers filed off (who themselves are the cast of TNG and other genre properties with different serial numbers), and there's some dodgy astrophysics - but there are some really unique and interesting aspects to the worldbuilding and the plot which make this a worthwhile read.
The book also explores the ethics of genocide when it's an "us OR them" scenario, the importance of compassion and forgiveness - for others and for oneself - and the struggle of people to atone for the sins of their ancestors by working for change and reform.
