This is a great steampunky mystery and adventure (with far more romantic dithering, mooning, and pining than I prefer in my SFF <gazes at the sky, perhaps seeking strength from a higher power>, but for many Kingfisher readers that is obviously a feature rather than a bug), spiced with the author's imaginative storytelling and trademark clever, sardonic dialogue.
It's shorter than the length of the author's other novels, and that's obviously a bug for everyone. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable read which is much enhanced by having first read the Clocktaur War duology and the earlier Paladin novels.
