This is a great (and very intense) time travel novel. Although I sometimes felt my eyes glazing over when the narrator (narrators?) got a little carried away musing over the logistics of time travel, overall, I found the story very engaging. Rather than dwelling too much on the environmental details of the past or the future, the story really uses time travel as a vehicle for exploring how the main character relates to himself (very literally), and delves into examinations of gender, sexuality, and mortality. Although the book is 50 years old, and hits some of the classic beats of time travel stories, it still felt surprisingly innovative and, at times, almost transgressive.
