Plot within a plot within a plot...
There are so many feints by Herbert and his characters in this one. Ingenious misdirections and surprises - some new, and some from the past - allow for the impossible; a novel right on par with the supreme masterpiece, DUNE.
Parts of DUNE MESSIAH and CHILDREN OF DUNE were written before DUNE was completed, giving these three books an integral story arc and a satisfying sense of conclusion. In the circular words used by Frank Herbert, "the beginning and the end are one".
If you love DUNE but haven't read beyond it in the series, do yourself a favor and finish the first three books. The main climax comes in CHILDREN OF DUNE, and you won't regret it.
