A solidly enjoyable work of SF horror, in which you actually learn a lot about fungi.
Yes, in terms of 'ideology' it is a bit confused--it's politically incorrect for sure, but it certainly doesn't care for contemporary racism. I'd say it was fairly anti-feminist (especially given the ending), and the character of Kimberly really doesn't do much other than bang the two men in vulgar passion and spend around half of the novel naked. At the same time, the men are pretty terrible too (Slocock is a rapist, a bully, and a murderer, and Wilson almost goes mad but saves himself) and the entire British army is given a good textual drummming.
