This well written, well paced post-apocalyptic Classic holds up particularly well, despite rather passive females and some dated technical descriptions. The central theme of an ultra religious reaction (including violence) against any technological or urban resurrection after a nuclear holocaust is gripping and very believable. At times, I found that the religious fervour was a bit terrifying. As to the central character's development, Len's hopes and struggles with both his religious upbringing and his eventual exposure to some of the "old" technology was skillfully done. I found Len's moral dilemmas and dreams for a better, freer future very relatable. This books does what great science fiction is meant to do. It makes you think and wonder.
