A standout among recent vampire fiction that I have read. it's a slow burn of underlying dread for Mark, our overly confident Day Boy, who is walking a fine line to avoid doom due to his own overconfidence in a world run by vampires. And these vampires are brutal, someotmes animalistic creatures of relentless appetites and unceasing hostility. Even Dain, Mark's sometimes human-seeming master, is full of sharp words and sharp blows. It's obvious that he carries love for Mark, but the change has burned out most of his humanity and let him cold and aloof and incapable of overt love. These vampires are sad beings in many ways, devoid of any creativity and longing to be human at times. A must read if you enjoy vampire fiction.
