The Handmaid's Tale

An excellent novel! Very highly recommended.

It is depressing to see how many aspects of American society seem to be moving towards the dystopia portrayed in the novel.

• Reversal of Roe versus Wade.
• Ongoing erosion of the judiciary.
• Indications that absolute political power really is absolutely corruptive.
• Banning of books (such as The Handmaids Tale).
• Assault on the Education system.
• Lunacy in place of rational approaches in health care
• Assault on science and the its role in society
• Muzzling of the voices of women and diverse individuals and groups in society

We need more democracy - less theocracy. Or, to rephrase that - more democracy and NO theocracy.

Or perhaps we should first reflect on positive aspects of theocracies that have had such pristine records on women's rights (and human rights). Hmm - Iran after the Shah was defeated? Afghanistan after the western allies were expelled? Salem during the witch trials? The catholic empire during the Inquisition?

No.

No theocracy - none whatsoever. Ever! Anywhere!!
