Read this as part of the collection "Children of the Gates" which contains two Andre Norton novellas.
Here Abide Monsters, originally published in September of 1973 by Margaret K. McElderry Books, later DAW. In this story, a mysterious side road led to past disappearances, and within the novel two more. These two have different reasons for taking the cutoff to the lake, but they end up together in a place that has collected a few more strays from various times. The ending is a bit abrupt.
