This book disturbed me, and even though that's what I look for in horror. I don't get the feeling as much as I would like. So just for that reason, this novel already gets a fairly good review. But the ending was sort of a letdown; it felt farther and farther from a plausible reality. I mean, the characters went batshit crazy for the most part, and it just simply felt a bit artificial. I think that the first half was fantastic, and it brings up some very interesting questions about how close man is to the apocalypse. Are we really one staggering event from killing each other? I tend to think so, but I also think this novel was entirely too pessimistic, basically all the characters are assholes, and it would be much more fascinating to see the resilience of man and not just the surrender. Doug's POV is lowkey insufferable. Are there really people who are guided by hate in all that they do? What a dumb mentality to have. You always have a choice in how you react to the cards you're given.
Read Primarily Because: I think I found this novel on Worlds Without End for a Vampire book challenge that I've long since failed.
