I am a firm believer that sometimes books wait patiently to be read for when they'll mean the most to you.
I read Sula as a teenager, for school, and I remember liking it but not getting much out of it. And because of this, I put off reading Beloved despite the critical acclaim and the Nobel Prize it was awarded. So I'm glad I waited until this book found me ready because I was utterly consumed by it in a way teenage me would never have been. I will be rereading Sula as a result and probably everything Toni Morrison has written.
This was an amazing book. This is a book that shakes the foundations of modern America until you notice just how flimsy they are. It is painful to read but also provides a sense of release like snapping a bone back into place. The love and grief that is held between these pages have my heart firmly in their clutches and I doubt they'll ever let go.
Required reading in my opinion.
