The Scar is a sprawling, imaginative feat of world-building that takes readers to Armada, a floating city made of thousands of lashed-together ships. Miéville’s creativity is on full display here, populating the ocean with bizarre creatures and complex political intrigue that surpasses the scope of many traditional fantasies.
The 3-star rating stems from the book’s dense prose and its pacing. While the setting is breathtaking, the narrative can get bogged down in technical descriptions and philosophical musings, making the middle section feel like a bit of a slog. It’s a brilliant piece of "New Weird" fiction, but its length and complexity might make it feel more like an academic exercise than a propulsive adventure.
