At first happy in his work, Guy Montag, a fireman in 24th centuary America who is required to burn books and the houses of those who own them, eventually begins to question the values of his work and his life. The unfathomable behaviour of an old woman unsettles him. Rather than abandon her books, she burns with them. What power can books have that some people are prepared to die rather than relinquish them?
When faced with the choice between conformity and freedom, which would you choose?
Full of humanism and decency this is a very fine achievement and arguably, along with The Martian Chronicles, Bradbury's best.
Note: I still like the movie Equilibrium a lot.
