Forerunner

Forerunner is a short, fairly run-of-the-mill piece of adventure science fiction. It’s an okay read, but won’t really change your life.

Simla is a scavenger in the cosmopolitan low-tech trading city of Kuxortal. She’s not like other people, but doesn’t especially stand out. When she gets mixed up with an off-world trader, various adventures ensue in the ruins of a prior civilisation, and she finds out not tremendously surprising things about herself.

I was a little surprised at the speed at which Simla's situation is set up - by the time we join the story, she's already lost her mentor and gained her pets - but then the whole book is less than 200 pages long, so I guess you need to get a move on.
