Pohl has created an interesting mystery in the artifacts that the alien Heechee left behind. The description of this technology as well as the space exploration it enables wets the appetite for more.

But the main character is not sympathetic and a bit hard to identify with at times. Especially the sessions with the AI psychotherapist detract from the story, in my opinion. I can't give more than 3.5 stars because of that.
