It's not deep, and it's not engaging any fundamental truths of the human experience, but The Lies of Locke Lamora is fun, imaginative, and well paced. In the city of Camorr, a city built around and between towers of indestructable glass built by some long-departed people, all organized crime is controlled by Cappa Barsavi, who brokered a standing peace agreement with the nobles and the police years go: leave us alone and we won't prey on the nobility. Locke Lamora and his gang, the Gentleman bastards, specialize in theatrical confidence games, relieving the nobilty of their coin and covertly violating the secret peace. Locke's already-perilous situation is exacerbated by an outside threat that seeks to take control of Barsavi's empire. Lynch's city of Camorr is imaginative and exotic, his characters believable and engaging, and the pacing keeps you engaged. I listened to this as an unabridged audiobook ant it was the quickest 22 hour listen I've ever had.
Gets a 7/10 in my book since it is fun, but it's not engaging any heavy questions. I look forward to reading more in the gentleman Bastards series. A more detailed review can be found on my blog.
