I enjoyed this book well enough. There are some really clever aspects of the set up and the main character is a linguist (as am I) so that was fun. It was oddly like reading a novel by Jane Austen at times, though, and that kind of threw me. It's not that I don't like Jane Austen, it's that I didn't expect that kind of a narrative in this particular book. I often wished that I could see the universe of this novel through other characters' eyes. There's a bit of that, through inference or counterpoint to what the main character is seeing/feeling/noticing but I'd have also liked to experience the story from another character's point of view entirely from time to time. All in all, it was a pleasant read.

I appreciated hearing the author's influences and goals in the novel after finishing it. It gave what I'd read more context and depth.
