I enjoyed this book a lot. It had a lot of the hero's journey type tropes but all in all was an interesting story. The main issue I think I have with this book is that I didn't read it when I was in my early teens. There wasn't as much development of the characters or plot as I really felt like there needed to be. The main character is supposed to have this very meaningful time training with his mentor before he goes on to the school and I felt like it was so short that there really wasn't any time to develop any type of attachment for the reader. Everything seemed to be hurrying the protagonist to the final goal of the big reveal of the bad guy and *poof* how to conquer him. It all linked in and made for itself a very complete story, but it seemed like if you took a fantastic story and then cut out a lot of material to either streamline it or maybe make it more palatable for a younger audience. Either way I felt that the terseness of the story made it less of a great story and more of a just ok one.
