This book creeps up on you. At first it seems an average book, time travelling historian explores the 14th century whilst back in her time all sorts of things go wrong at the Time Travel Institute. The two stories plod along pleasantly enough for quite a while, letting you get to know the characters in both time zones. It's not unpleasant, but you do wonder why the book won awards for this.
And then... the last part of the book was extraordinary and very moving. Even though you can see it coming a mile away, the ending has the power to shock, largely because of Willis' writing. And the build up in the earlier part of the book makes so much more sense and lends a sense of ineviatability to what happens.
Definitely worth reading. I'm minded to look at her other books
