This was only my second experience with Steampunk so I can't comment on the novel as a representation of the genre. I can say that I did find it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read that left me eager to continue my explorations in the genre.
A mysterious government Ministry, secret societies, and mayhem that stretches from the streets of London to the farthest reaches of the globe. Top this off with two protaganists who are a study in opposites: impulsive/controlled; active/bookish; colonies/Mother England; trying to be a lady/raised a gentleman; field agent/archivist. You could not find two people much different than Eliza Braun and Wellington Books. Their differences would have prevented them from becoming an effective team if circumstances had not intervened. Woe to their common enemy.
