This novel can be regarded as the third is a loose series known as the Quantum Logic series. The other novels are Queen of Angels, Heads and Slant. Queen of Angels and Slant have the same protagonist.

The novel form is that of the autobiography of Casseia Majumdar a young Martian colonist from her adolescence to her imprisonment as deposed President of Mars. The plot concerns the efforts of Mars to maintain it's independence from Mars and it's enventual escape from the solar system.

The novel (444 pages) starts of slowly but picks up with Casseia's visit to Earth, drags again towards the middle and accelerates at the end. The hard science and physics are, as always with Greg Bear, done very well. The character of Casseia is done very well helped by first person narration. The other characters are rather more two dimensional. Overlong but interesting.
