Boneshaker - It's Not SF!

What is Steampunk? A style, if so why is it also sometimes science fiction? I can't say for sure. All I know is this book says science fiction on the cover but I don't think that it really is.

I found Boneshaker overly simplistic. This book lacks interesting theories of any kind other than some idle speculation on the Civil War. Maybe this would be better classed as speculative historical fiction?

Bland, predictable character development and world traits. Some interesting plot themes progress but nothing fantastic. Nobody to really invest in or care about. Cliché disadvantaged protagonists and thugs turned gold-hearted heroes (then often into zombies..., duh!)

Generally well written/edited from a technical standpoint.

Maybe the better elements of SF come in the later series novels? Will not be bothering to find out.

It promises science fiction; it won the Locus SF Award! But for some reason we just get cogs and Zeppelins? Disappointing...

3/5

Cheers,
