The perfect mix of gallows humor and hard near-future sf. Weir did a great job of making you relate to Watney without using dramatic tropes where Watney could have had loved ones that were his motivation to survive. He wanted to survive for himself and the fact that almost no details of his pre-mars personal life were revealed allowed for any reader to identify with the Watney's ordeal simply by showing how he handled the day to day survival. This book is the definition of instant classic for me and I hope some awards are thrown its way so it isn't forgotten.
