The Mothers of Voorhisville – Mary Rickert
3.5 Stars
This was a totally random read. I found this while browsing the Tor website looking for Nebula nominated novellas.
A charismatic stranger comes to the small town of Voorhisville. Unbeknownst to each other, many women and a few teens have an affair with this man and all become pregnant. This is a creepy little story. Told from the point of view of multiple characters, it illustrates how people perceive the same things differently. It also illustrates how far mothers will go to protect their young; how a group will do something that is morally wrong when they know it is wrong and when, in the grand scheme of things, it is not the right thing to do; how paranoia and mistrust lead to tragedy.
When I think about this story, I get a picture in my head of fat little cherubs with bloody little fangs flying around laughing. Creepy.
