Definitely not sci-fi but a good whodunit nevertheless. Smoothly flowing first-person narrative with an empathetic protagonist. Decent mystery with several red herrings thrown into the mix. Perhaps a few too many plot coincidences but that is easy to forgive in light of the page-turn inducing writing style. Winters has a real knack for revealing just enough without exposing too much too early and his character development is quite good.
In style, if not in substance, this story reminded me a bit of the Simon Ziele mysteries by Stefanie Pintoff. Like the Ziele books, this one hooked me early and kept me interested throughout. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel soon.
