Mabel cannot stand the sight of all those children in their family anymore after she lost her long awaited child. Together with Jack she retreats to remote Alaska to carve out a farm. But this is not the partnership she envisaged. While Jack does the backbreaking work in the woods and the fields, she tends the house and falls ever deeper into a depressive mood as winter falls on the land. Though slowly a friendship grows with the neighbors, their visits are few. And then one evening she sees a young girl in the wood. At first very shy, she is lured into their home for short visits. Her presence changes the lives of Mabel and Jack.
This gentle story tells us about the land - the harsh realities of carving out a living in an unforgiving place and the stark beauty of the place. And it tells about loving people just the way they are and enjoying them as long as they are around.
