Suppose Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Blish's A Case of Conscience met and fell in love and produced a baby... A rather pretentious and long-winded baby...
Ultimately, this was a disappointing book for me. The writing is very good and there is, throughout, a deep sense of foreboding - but it sort of peters out with a real lack of resolution as that feeling of impending doom just evaporates. And the big reveal about the Oasans was, in my opinion, very anti-climactic. All in all, not nearly as intense as Faber's Under the Skin - which I found borderline brilliant on so many levels.
