I didn't know, until I looked at some reviews afterwards, that it was supposed to be a retelling of "Snow White" from the Stepmother's point of view. (Is that why it is considered "genre" rather than "literary"?) It was character- and mood-driven, rather than plotty, but the characters were nebulous; I couldn't get a strong grasp on any of them. There were certainly many surprises, enough that I had to go back to see if I had read carelessly and missed them. I'm not sure how I feel about this book - I think I will have to give it time to settle.
