I hadn't read any Heinlein novels in over a decade, then burned through about eight of his early ones so far this year. This is not just one of the best of his early period, but one of the best of his novels I've read period. Time travel stories are generally not my favorite flavor of sci-fi. However, I was fully engaged on the ins and outs of the main characters travels forward and back. The reason for being engaged was characterization. This is clearly one of Heinlein's best pieces of character writing and the main character seems to be a clear stand in for himself. The other characters popped too and even the cat was expertly written. This book was a lot of fun and still holds up as an entertaining read at a future date past the date envisioned by Heinlein in the novel.
