I read this one so many years ago I couldn't actually remember much about it except for an impression that it was a magical book.

On re-reading I found that impression was correct. This is the book that introduced a much younger me to the world of urban fantasy, and it was mystical, magical and totally engaging. The older me enjoyed it just as much, but for with a little whistfulness for the urban fantasy that could have been, had the sub-genre not been completely overtaken by its less magical descendents.

Try this one as an early work of urban fantasy by an absolute master of his craft.
