A highly interesting and thought-provoking read.

As the author of the preface in my edition notes you need to completely dismiss the "science" part of this collection of loosely connected stories. But once you get over this suspension of disbelief the book raises a huge number of timeless questions: Purpose of life. Progress. Progress. What IS humanity actually? Is killing an intrinisic part of us - and does it have to be?

Clifford Simak does not provide us with easy answers, but he gives a great starting point.

I've also got the impression that this book was an inspiration for some others I've read recently - what about the relationship of Jenkins and R. Daneel Olivaw...

Recommended for historical value and as a philosophical novel, not as a SF novel.
