This is considered the first of Wells' science fiction works and the genre's first work of true time travel. I feel like the story was not fully realized and that modernized adaptions have fleshed it out (this in contrast to The War of the Worlds).
Reading these classics has been a wonderful game of comparing expectations of the story gleaned from popular culture to the original writing. The novella has no travel to the past but only the adventure to see the far future of humanity and the planet. I wanted a more compelling climax but it fits with other writings of the same period.
Overall a nice read for a rainy afternoon but not a must read for everybody.
