Uneven.

It started fascinating. The description of Grass, Dimity's first hunt and the meeting of the bons was fascinating. So were some of the subsequent chapters and storylines.

On the other hand, the mystery fell sort of flat, the solution seemed like a deus ex machina to me. Events happened very abruptly, whereas Marjorie's inner monologue interrupted the flow of the story. The brainwashing pushed some of my buttons... and not in a good way.

I believe the novel would have been better with one or two fewer sets of characters and more focus on the others instead.

With a bit more polishing this might have been an excellent book. The way it is I am left with some very mixed feelings and cannot recommend it wholeheartedly.
