I enjoyed reading The Fifth Dragon. At first I found it difficult to understand what was going on. Then I realized the story was non-linear and flashbacks were mixed in. While re-reading it, everything was clearer. The main characters have a nice energy going on between them and their decisions drive the plot forward.
As an engineer myself I liked the mentions of technology and science in The Fifth Dragon and I was able to identify with the viewpoint character. I suspect technology and science will be the major things that could keep SF interesting for me, but this is actually the first time I read SF (I'm a fantasy fan and decided to give SF a try).
Based on The Fifth Dragon I like SF better than the horror short stories I read, but I still prefer fantasy. This story does makes me curious as to what else science fiction has to offer, so I'll be looking out for more in the future.
