Despite the GoPro cameras, vlogs and high-tech surveillance systems, Hex felt like something of a good old-fashioned horror. And yes, there were some genuinely scary scenes. Interestingly, some of the most terrifying parts were not supernatural in nature but were to do with the behaviour of a group of people living in conditions of chronic intense fear and what that fear drove them to do.

Hex is very much a plot-driven story, rather than character based and I felt that the female characters in particular were rather 2-dimensional. The language at times felt rather clunky but that could have been to do with the translation. Although this is a translation from Dutch, the author also changed the setting from Holland to the USA. I'm not sure this made the story any more relatable for me, but then I am English rather than American so perhaps that's why.
