The plot: the Wise One sends the Chosen Ones on A Quest for the Sacred Object to Save the Kingdom.
Oh yes, there are tropes and archetypes galore in "Last Song Before Night." But I enjoyed it so much I didn't even care. The characters, though archetypal, are interesting and well developed, and the plot, though not entirely original, is intriguing. The storytelling is engaging, the pacing is nearly perfect, and the writing quality is superior to what one expects in genre fiction.
"Last Song Before Night" was a 4-star read for me. I look forward to more by the author, with hopes that in her next novel she combines her writing talent with a bit more originality and imagination.
