My hunch is that the Hugo award for this novel (and the Nebula nomination) might have had more to do with sentimentality, and appreciation for all of Asimov's contributions to SF and science awareness than the specific merits of this novel. It would have been great if one of The Good Doctor's top novels, like Caves of Steel or The End of Eternity had been nominated and won a Hugo or Nebula.

That being said, this is a good novel and a welcome addition to to the series (nineteen books in all, counting robots, empire, foundation, etc.). It was quite amazing for all of us long-time fans to see a return to Hari Seldon's universe after such a long gap.

If you want to appreciate Asimov at his very best, try some of his excellent short stories. Those that won Hugos or Nebulas would be a good place to start.

My rating system: I begin with one star being equivalent to a rating of "C -". Progressing upwards, I add ½ star for each step, up to the maximum 5 stars, which is equivalent to a rating of "A"+. I reserve ½ star for BOMBS, there being no option of zero or negative stars.
