In my persistent misconception that the silver rocket ship trophy is awarded to science fiction novels, I expected Paladin of Souls to be science fiction. It's not. It's a swords and sorcerers fantasy. It won the Hugo in 2004, among others.

I had read three or four of Bujold's VorKosigan series and kind of expected that this might have been a part of that series, or at least similar. It's not. I'm not a great fan of the fantasy genre, but this one is pretty good. I expect that folks who enjoy books of this ilk would really enjoy this one.

I read it because it was a Hugo winner. It's the second of a series of three. There were allusions to prior events that took place presumably in the first book, but the story didn't suffer much because I hadn't read it. The ending, kind of a long winding down, seemed to be a preparation for the next novel.
