Berserker

Not knowing anything about this series before taking it up, it was far better than I expected! I was expecting something more like a knock-off of Starship Troopers, but it was deeper, and despite its Martian Chronicles-type structure, it did have some recurring characters. Not much development though, so if you are looking for character-driven vs. story-driven, this is not the place for you. This happy discovery will lead to me reading the other books down the line.
