This is a dense book. Trying on the surface to be an investigation of the Jewish soul, underneath that is a hard-boiled detective story, and underneath that is an alternate history novel, with a world not unlike our own. Of course, underneath that is the investigation of the Jewish soul again.
Trying to project an atmosphere of hopelessness throughout the book, at the end, it still finishes with a glimmer of hope, not for the coming of the long overdue Messiah, but for the world at large, and for our heroes specifically.
