Like every sci-fi fan in the 21st century, I’m a huge fan of the movie version of 2001, and I can now confidently say that I’m a pretty big fan of the book too. It’s not as good as the film, but it’s very close. The narrative is sharp and interesting, with good prose and an overall surprisingly melancholy tone. Read through this lens, the infamously bizarre parts of the film actually make sense. It’s still strange and obscure, but the narration here gives just enough to make it all logical and interesting. Overall, an absolutely fantastic book.
